Festival Theme
The theme for the 2011 Legacy Trust NZ Mural Contest & Arts Festival is 'In a Land of Plenty.' Open-Air Art believes this not only gives artists plenty of scope to capture the attractions of the Bay of Plenty and New Zealand generally, but may also prompt them to take a look at contrasts such as poverty and abuse of the environment.
Eligibility
The previous two Mural Contests were in 2006 and 2008. Katikati Open-Air Art welcomes entries from artists anywhere in New Zealand and beyond. Judging will be by an independent panel.
Prizes
The 2011 winner will receive $5000 plus the June Carlton Memorial Trophy. The runner-up will take home $1,700. There will also be a People's Choice monetary award . See all competition details below.
Sculpture Contest
This has become a popular part of the festival. The 2011 contest includes a local prize for the first time.
See all competition details below.
Art of the Lens Photographic Contest
Prizes for the best photographs in two classes, as well as a display category.
Mural Contest Changes
We are making a few minor changes to the way the mural contest is run so that people will still be able to see the artists painting on the Saturday, said KOAA president Steve Graveson. They will begin their mural on Tuesday, October 11 and finish on Saturday, October 15. We plan to have all the murals together on the Sunday for the judging, viewing and prize giving with the mural auction held at a later date Submissions will close on August 12 and the eight finalists will be announced then.
The timing of this festival coincides with the Rugby World Cup. Because of our links to first All Black captain Dave Gallaher, and our Irish history, we expect to attract some overseas visitors as well.
Art to Wear Challenge
A new competition for the creation of an original garment of wearable art, and the opportunity to attend a design workshop.
